While they take a lot longer to get places, they are less than half the price of most flights and, if you book the right company, the accommodations can be just as nice, if not nicer.
I went to Iguazu Falls for about three days and took buses to get there and back. The bus ride was about 18 to 20 hours long, however, both times we left in the late evening so that we could spend most of the trip sleeping, which made the trips a lot easier. I would recommend doing the same. On the way to Iguazu, we took the bus company Rio Uruguay, which was amazing. The seats were very spacious, they gave us pillows and blankets and the seats turned into comfortable semi-beds. Our trip back was with a different bus company and was not as comfortable; thus, I highly recommend taking Rio Uruguay on long trips if you are able to.
We took the bus from the Retiro Bus station. It was about a 15 minute walk from our hostel so we left about 40 minutes before our estimated departure time; however, we were not exactly sure where the station was located and we got lost and almost missed our bus! So I recommend giving yourself ample time to get to the station if you decide to walk, or if you are running short on time, take a cab. You can also take the subte to the Retiro train station, and then walk about ten minutes to the bus station, which is round the corner from the train station, but if you do this I again recommend giving yourself a lot of time in case you get lost or are not able to find it.
All in all, my experience with using buses to travel around Argentina was positive and I recommend it to those who want a cheap and comfortable way of transportation.
