For the last soft skills article, we leave a skill that we consider to be one of the most important: Teamwork

Teamwork is not just about contributing effectively to a group working towards a common goal. It is being able to share knowledge and actions, expertise, and ways of working. It is being able to build strong bonds with colleagues and to sustain each other. It is being open to new opinions and understanding that we are building together. Teamwork and its importance is a living reflection of the relevance of community work and moving away from individualistic practices.

We understand teamwork as more than just a skill: it is one of the values we work with. Teamwork is part of our vision. It's about understanding that together we can build something better.

The volunteer will always be immersed in a group work environment, both in the organization itself and in the specific project. One of the objectives is that the volunteer can have a better understanding of how we work, how the organizations work. And, of course, that they can be part of that: preparing lunch for the community, doing activities for the children in the pre-school, distributing the tasks in the gardening project, teaching classes, and having a support team always. From preparing lunch for the community, doing activities for the children in the pre-school, distributing the tasks in the gardening project, teaching classes, and having a support team always. Doing volunteer work implies a direct immersion in teamwork and is one of the most representative things of this experience.

A School Two Blocks Down

  • BYS Academy: The Background

Silvia has the essence of everyone's favorite aunt, greeting you with the hug of a lifelong friend. She is the owner of BYS Academy, an English school she founded in 2005 to create an affordable educational opportunity for the students of her neighborhood, two blocks from Estancia Ing. Pablo Nogués, right behind the small shopping center. Her laughter is the last thing that would tell you how close she came to losing all of it through an economic crisis and without government funding.

Now the school functions as a cooperative in tandem with Voluntario Global. Graduated students return as volunteer teachers to gain work experience for formal jobs. Their work is supplemented by volunteers from Voluntario Global, and this is where Victor and I enter.

By Kylan Denney

Halfway through my internship and teaching experience, I’ve been given more than I thought possible. I’ve been given complexity, understanding and hope in so many different capacities from others and all of it happened through Voluntario Global.

Pensar el voluntariado como una experiencia colectiva

Siempre decimos que el voluntariado es un proceso de aprendizaje, y un proceso de aprendizaje jamás sucede de manera aislada. Por lo tanto el voluntariado también es una experiencia colectiva.
