What began as a volunteer experience in Buenos Aires turned into a path full of learning, connections, and new perspectives. Through the Sociabilidades research project and community workshops, this experience reminds us that listening and sharing are also powerful ways to care and to bring about change.

Coming to Buenos Aires was, for me, much more than a trip. I came with the idea of joining a research project to learn how knowledge is built through practice and community, but I left with so much more than that: I took with me stories, hugs, and the certainty that listening is a powerful form of care. Over these four weeks, I got to see up close the reality of people experiencing homelessness, something that often feels distant until you sit down and listen without judgment. Through the radio and cooking workshops, I realized that a space for speaking can become a refuge: there, people share difficult experiences, but also laughter, mates, and the desire to imagine better futures.

The research team welcomed me from day one, trusted me, and helped me understand the importance of making visible what many prefer not to see. The organization Voluntario Global was also key: Milena and everyone involved made me feel at home, helped me get oriented in the city, and eased my fear of the unknown.

Today, I return with a different perspective: I take with me empathy, reflection, and a deep desire to continue connecting with other realities. I’ve learned that even if we can’t always change everything, we can listen, we can be present, and sometimes, with a hug or a kind word, we can make a difference. I hope this is just the first of many encounters.
